Description
Dramatic view of Mount Ararat in Armenia in the extreme east of Turkey by German-born Russian painter Richard Zommer (1866-c.1939). A group of fur-hatted local horsemen warm themselves by a fire in the foreground, providing a useful sense of perspective to the snow-capped peak, which at almost 17,000 feet above sea level is the highest mountain in Turkey. Though not identified by name in the Bible, popular legend has it that Mount Ararat was the final resting place of Noah's Ark. The smaller (at a mere 12,782 feet) 'Little Ararat' is visible in the background. Born in Munich, Zommer studied in St Petersburg, moving to Georgia in the south of Russia in the early 20th century. Like many Georgian intellectuals and artists, and as an ethnic German, he suffered persecution under Stalin and is presumed to have been forbibly relocated to Siberia or Kazakhstan at the outbreak of World War II. The exact date and location of his death are unknown.
